Folly Fields Beach on Hilton Head Island, SC – FRIENDSHIP…
“If you're alone, I'll be your shadow.
If you want to cry, I'll be your shoulder.
If you want a hug, I'll be your pillow.
If you need to be happy, I'll be your smile.
But anytime you need a friend, I'll just be me.”

Charleston United Daughters of the Confederacy Museum -
West end of the market & calls Charleston's Historic Market Hall home. The building was built in 1841. Considered the fourth most important collection in the world, items on display include the Secession Flag, the first Confederate National Flag to fly over Fort Sumter, regimental and battle flags. Very interesting, and a nice looking building which has been renovated following damage by Hurricane Hugo.

National Marine Corps Museum building is a soaring, 210-foot tilted mast atop a 160-foot glass atrium. This design was inspired by the famous Iwo Jima flag raising of World War II, the image that also inspired the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

Dupont Circle Fountain & a memorial statue of Samuel Francis du Pont
“The statue, sculpted by Launt Thompson, was erected in 1884, and the circle was landscaped, with exotic flowers and ornamental trees. In 1921, the current double-tiered white marble fountain replaced the statue, which was moved to Rockford Park in Wilmington, Delaware. Daniel Chester French and architect, Henry Bacon, the co-creators of the Lincoln Memorial, designed the fountain, which features carvings of three classical figures symbolizing the sea, the stars and the wind on the fountain's shaft”

United Methodist Building
(the only NON-government building on Capitol Hill)
“It is designed in Italian Renaissance style and constructed of Indiana limestone with a craftsmanship that would be difficult to duplicate today.
In addition to its architectural beauty, the building is significant for the role it has played at turning-points in the nation's history. These include the 1963 March on Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the 1968 Poor People's March, the farmworkers' boycott; years of protest against the Vietnam War; ERA marches, the 1978 Longest Walk of Native Americans; and the 1989 Housing NOW! March.
It's adjacent apartment complex, constructed in 1931, has been home to scores of congressional representatives' Methodist bishops and Supreme Court Justices men and women in leadership roles who have shaped the fabric of American society.
The Building's beautiful Simpson Memorial Chapel, named for a close personal friend of President Abraham Lincoln, has served as a place of sanctuary and prayer for those who live and work within the shadow of the Capitol. Within these walls, leaders from both parties and all religious persuasions have found the strength and courage to act on their convictions.”

“Extending the Book” exhibit now showing, saw the exhibit, fabulous books.
“The concept of extra-illustration is simple: choose a book, identify significant people, places, and things in it, then insert pictures of them in appropriate places as visual annotations to the text. Each extra-illustrated book is thus the unique creation of a former owner. This exhibition examines the art and the practice of extra-illustration from its rise in the late eighteenth century through its decline over a hundred years later, with a special focus on Shakespeare’s works.”

“SOUTH OF THE BORDER” – Road Trip – Stop #1
Self – shot in Dillon, SC
“In 1949, Mr. Alan Schafer built a simple 18 x 36 foot beer stand known as South of the Border Beer Depot. As it adjoined the North Carolina counties, which were dry of alcoholic beverages, business boomed. A few years later a 10-seat grill was added and the business was re-named South of the Border Drive-In.”

Inside the Library of Congress
"With approximately two-thirds of the books and periodicals in its collections in languages other than English, the Library of Congress is truly an international resource. It houses information on virtually every country, region, national, ethnic, and religious group, often equal to or surpassing collections found elsewhere. For example, the Library's Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Polish collections are the largest outside of those countries, and the Arabic collections are the largest outside of Egypt. The collection of Luso-Hispanic materials is the largest in the world; its collection of Judaica ranks among the largest anywhere."

“Contemplation of Justice” - by James Earle Fraser
U.S. Supreme Court, Capitol Hill, DC
"Contemplation of Justice" Statue on the Supreme Court Plaza by James Earle Fraser. In this sculpture, a seated female figure reflects on a small figure of Justice that she holds in her right hand. The figure of Justice is blindfolded and cradles a set of scales in her arms.

The portrayal of a female figure representing Justice dates back to depicitions of Themis and Justicia in ancient mythology. Themis, known for her clear-sightedness, was the Greek Goddess of Justice and Law. In Roman mythology, Justicia (Justice) was one of the four Virtues along with Prudence, Fortitude, and Temperence.

The Awakening - National Harbor, MD
The big toe & the hand (trying to take the flag?)
“The Awakening is a 100-foot statue of a giant embedded in the earth, struggling to free himself, located at National Harbor in Prince George's County, Maryland, just outside the District of Columbia. It was created by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. and originally installed at Hains Point (East Potomac Park), Washington, D.C. in 1980 for the International Sculpture Conference Exhibition.
The statue consists of five separate aluminum pieces buried in the ground, giving the impression of a panicked giant trying to pull himself to the surface. The left hand and right foot barely protrude, while the bent left leg and knee jut into the air. The 17-foot right arm and hand reach farther out of the ground, and the bearded face, with the mouth in mid-scream, struggles to emerge from the surrounding earth.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Awakening_(sculpture)

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall
Washington, DC
“Deliberately setting aside the controversies of the war, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors the men and women who served when their Nation called upon them. The designer, Maya Lin, felt that “the politics had eclipsed the veterans, their service and their lives.” She kept the design elegantly simple to “allow everyone to respond and remember.”
